They say that there are 3 taboo topics that should not be discussed in mixed company or with those you do not know very well, Politics, Religion, and Relationships. But it seems that times have changed and we end up talking about very personal matters with certain people, such as our hairstylist. It seems these days clients are telling their stylist more than their therapist. There is a special bond that is formed between client and stylist. If you can trust them with your hair, you feel you can trust them with your personal life as well. The relationship you have with your stylist carries over from one appointment to the next. However, it is wise to know where to draw the line when it comes to which topics to discuss. Use common sense and know what to say and what not to say.

You have just completed your services at the salon, and it’s time to decide who to tip and how much to tip them, this can be uncomfortable if you’re not sure what to do. Ideally, we feel that anyone who has provided a service to you should receive a tip, from your stylist right on down to the person who gets your coat for you. However, many people prefer to tip only those who had a hand in the styling process, i.e. the shampoo assistant and your stylist. So, how much of a tip is fair? Generally, you should give your stylist at least 20% of the total cost of services, but keep in mind exactly what you had done, how long it took, and how much you love it. When tipping the shampoo assistant, anywhere from $2.00 to $10.00 or more can be appropriate, depending on the services rendered. Always remember who it is you’re tipping, do you and your stylist laugh and talk as you’re getting your hair done? Does he/she make you feel good about yourself? Does the shampoo assistant put you to sleep in the sink? Does he/she smile at you and call you by name when you get into the chair? When in doubt, base the tip amount on the overall experience you had in the salon, and you can’t go wrong.
