If your passion for fashion is in high gear get ready for a blast from the past this spring. Everywhere we look we see revivals of the 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, and the 80's. Moreover we see era revivals a la Tudor style silhouettes and Grecian goddess wonders. With so many choices and so few rules, fashionistas near and far will need to be on the look out for the image paramedics. Do you love miniskirts and crop jackets or do you prefer the sporty look of your favorite hooded and pouched sweatshirt? Whatever your preference, the fashion police remind us if we're old enough to remember an era we're too old to wear it. But with all the current retro looks how can we be fashionable without becoming fashion victims? The secret is in portion control.
The big news this spring is color. Neiman Marcus looks more like Benjamin Moore than haute couture. Enjoy the look and the feeling of color. Lavender, pink, and lettuce green (in Easter egg hues) are smart choices to update last year's wardrobe. Still like the basics? Black and white looks crisp again especially in big prints. Check out the latest in dots and bold garden designs. The neutral hue for 2003 is café au lait but be sure to punch it up with a big color accessory item such as a necklace or tote bag.
Never before has sportswear created such a fashion fusion. You will be pleasantly surprised to see many of your favorite sporty pieces reinterpreted in luxe fabrics you can wear to the office and beyond. Look at easy cargo pants in upscale fabrics or consider a bomber jacket in crinkled silk. Comfort is key and that means salable, wearable, attractive fashions. Now, that's fashion we can live with.
What are the biggest fashion trends that call for BIA (buyer in action) code? Miniskirts, anything pink, and feminine fabrics! Minis will be strong options for young, leggy types with pretty painted feet worn with stilettos. It's a killer look for killer bodies. Not up for that action? Wear satiny, shiny, metallic fabrics in tank tops or T's and let your makeup sparkle too. The prettiest fabrics are frothy chiffons in high waist dresses and irresistible laces in jackets, skirts, tops and dresses. Pink is the color of love - could we use some or what? Try pink in small doses like lipstick and nail polish or go all out in pretty lady-like suits. Finally, this season's trends are embellished with zippers, ribbons, bows, straps, cutouts, draping, ruching and shirring. Mary Lou Luther of the Trend Report says, 'what we used to call details are now the very DNA of spring fashion.'
Let's face it, spring is never really here without revamping our makeup and skincare. Dewy, shimmer soft makeup has a translucency to it that is age forgiving and helps us feel young. Look for light diffusing makeup with SPF protection and glow - day into night! Eyes look crystalline with a touch of shiny liquid eye shadow. Be careful to apply in small doses so the shadow doesn't sit in areas you would rather not draw attention to. Lips are painted in the most alluring shades of pink. Remember, for every cool tone pink there is an equal and opposite warm tone pink. So, if you look better in peachy pinks than blue-pinks test your options. Cheeks are soft and muted. Try a new creamy blush pot and see the blended effect. Again, the trick is to exercise portion control. Decide on what you want to highlight and focus your color in that region. If it's your eyes dust on a sheer frosty color and play down the lip color with a neutral lip tint with lots of gloss. If you want to play up your lips, apply a fresh new color with gloss and neutralize the eye tint. Cheeks should remain a whisper of color blended with your foundation.
Spring is a time for change, rejuvenation and cleaning out. Our wardrobe, hair, makeup and skincare need a good spring cleaning in order to look fresh for a new season. Think of yourself as a garden. You wouldn't plant vegetables or herbs without first tilling and fertilizing the soil. May I suggest you visit your favorite spa and treat yourself to a facial or a day of beauty. At home, give yourself a smoothing body scrub and follow it with a fragrant lotion soak. As warmer weather approaches, skin will be exposed so now is the time to buff and fluff. The goal is to prepare and repair - so you look your best and feel your best.
This spring, I'll be traveling through time, from the Grecian goddess era to the 80's cinch-waist look from Dynasty. I can't wait to meet you along the way, my friends, to see what you discover is your favorite look. Go ahead, express yourself, you sexy thing! |
